Clientbackup
The Clientbackup (CBK) service offers ETH researchers, lecturers and staff the possibility of backing up their mobile devices (clients) within the scope of the applicable BOT (rules of use for telematics).
The data that is backed up from the customer’s client is stored on the central storage systems (on-premises) of ETH Zurich. The service complements the existing "Data-Backup&Restore" (DBR) service offered by IT Services. Individual and decentralised solutions can be dispensed with, resulting in an overall reduction in costs (economies of scale).
The CBK service is charged internally within ETH to the end customer at CHF 70/licence + additional storage space (data pool) per year. Invoicing takes place in advance for one year when the service is ordered via the IT Shop and SAP.
Requirements
The "Clientbackup" service is available for the following mobile devices:
- MAC with current OS
- Linux with current OS
- Windows with current OS
Please get advice from your ISG or a responsible IT Support employee.
Quality assurance
The client receives daily messages from the client agent regarding the success of the backup.
The selective backup of data from end devices provides authorised ETH staff with backups for business-relevant data. Customer’s clients are defined as mobile devices such as laptops. Clients must be connected to the Internet during backup, but NOT necessarily to the ETH network.
- Easy-to-use web interface for the backup and restore of data
- Web interface for checking data backups of end devices incl. e-mail notification
- Very efficient data backup WITHOUT a VPN connection
- Advisory provided to users from IT managers in the organisational unit
- Restoration of the backed-up data if it is lost
- Restoration of the backed-up data if the end device is lost
- Delegation of data restoration through IT responsibles of the organisational unit
- Backed-up date is stored at ETH (on the premises)
Whom is this service intended for?
Within ETH:
Researchers and lecturers who are frequently on the move with their mobile devices and generate valuable data on these mobile clients and who are only able to store this data on the central data storage systems of ETH to a very limited extent.
Possibly, special test facilities that generate data.
Outside of ETH:
Researchers from other research institutes and ETH-affiliated units that are served by an ETH ISG.
Costs
The CBK service is charged internally within ETH to the end customer or their cost centre at CHF 70 per licence + additional storage space (data pool) per year. Invoicing takes place in advance for one year when the service is ordered via the IT Shop and SAP.
How is the service ordered?
ETH staff can order the licence for the CBK service via their ISG or IT Support for this. This service backs up the data from mobile devices:
- Standard data volumes – S size = 200 GB: CHF 70
- Medium data volume – M size = 500 GB: CHF 107.50
- Large data volume – L size = 1 TB: CHF 170
The order for the licence and the data volume is handled by the ISG or the responsible IT Support employee.
After ordering and allocating the required data volume, the end user logs into the assigned web portal "dept.clientbackup.ethz.ch" and downloads the appropriate agent.
